ICC arrest warrant for Al-Bashir hailed by Darfur People’s Association of New York

It was a big day for the Darfur People’s Association of New York.  The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir on Wednesday.  In New York, The Darfuri community gathered in a rally at the UN praising this move to hold Al-bashir accountable for war crimes.  Supporters of the Government of Sudan were also there countering this demonstration.

At the end of the night the DPA gathered in Kensington and reflected on the significance of the day.  For almost 6 years since the violence started, they have been monitoring every moment.  It was really great to see friends I’ve gotten to know through the years who have been tireless advocates for their friends, family and community back home.

There is still much to do from now on… including how to actually arrest Al-bashir.  The ICC developments though promising will be not be without consequences and backlash.  it is still a difficult road ahead.
